Mat-Su Borough’s First Recreational Marijuana Dispensary Opens

Green Jar Dispensary Wasilla Alaska

Green Jar opened its doors for the first time over the weekend. It is the first retail marijuana dispensary to open in Mat-Su Borough. Customers began lining up around noon.

The line quickly grew, and grew past the door, according to KTUU 2 News. The shop sells dry flower and edibles. To maintain supply, Green Jar is setting daily selling limits. Supply has been an issue in Alaska so owner, Caleb Saunders, wants to make sure their supply does not run out.

Saunders said, “The nerves started to fade away for me as I started seeing people coming into the store. I think the nervousness was just the unknown.”

Regarding lack of supply, Saunders said, “It took me a long time to find the little bit of product that I do have.”

Green Jar is just outside of Wasilla city limits, where recreational marijuana is banned. City Councilman Stu Graham says that part of the reason for the ban is the increased traffic that would have required the hiring of additional police officers.

Saunders, however, has had nothing but support from the Mat-Su borough community.

He said, “It’s been a really long process getting here but we’ve had a lot of support from the other stores and the community.”
