Only two labs are available in Alaska to test raw marijuana before it can be sold in dispensaries. This is the last hurdle that recreational marijuana retail shop owners need to get past so that they can open for business.

CannTest is expected to open by mid-October, but is still awaiting its final inspection phase to be completed, The Washington Post reports.

The first Anchorage-based marijuana retail store license was awarded to Arctic Herbery on Tuesday.

November 1 is the planned opening day for Arctic Herbery. He’s expecting business to be hectic with long lines of people wanting to make their first legal marijuana purchases.

Bryant Thorp, owner of Artic Herbery, said, “When Krispy Kreme opened, Cabela’s or Kmart back in the day, people freak out, they go nuts.”

Nick and Destiny Neade, owners of Frozen Budz, is also awaiting their final inspection approvals to complete their licensing phase. Destiny Neade said, “That will finalize our retail license, but like everybody, we’re just waiting on the testing labs.”

Testing raw marijuana takes about 72 hours. Once labs open and test products, dispensaries can open within about a week.

Marijuana supporter and lab co-owner, Tim Hinterberger said, “It’s pretty exciting for me personally to see this progress. I know people are eager to get the things going and frustrated they’re not happening faster, but from my point of view, we’re making great strides over the many years I’ve been involved with this. Things are finally happening.”
