Alaskan Police Chief Joins the State’s Marijuana Regulatory Board

G

Governor Bill Walker appointed North Slop Borough’s police chief Travis Welch to the state’s Marijuana Control Board. He’ll step into the public safety position on the board. Following Jeff Sessions’ announcement earlier this month, Soldotna Police Chief Peter Mlynarik vacated the position.

The Alaska legislature must confirm Welch’s appointment, according to U.S. News & World Report. Some board members are unable to show confidence in Welch’s appointment. Cary Carrigan, of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association, voiced concern regarding the appointment as having a “prohibitionist” on the board may cause difficulty.

Welch has not commented on his appointment yet. Reasons for his choice over the other candidate for the public safety seat have not been made available.
